Arctic Adventure

  Reindeer herding has always been about a family business.  Here is some pictures from our big event here in July, the reindeer calf marking. It is a very primitive lifestyle at first sight, but it is also something genuine in the old traditional heritage of my people. It is in nowadays for the most of us a hobby or lifestyle business to be a reindeer herder. The summer is usually something extra ordinary for the beauty of it, for the harmony with nature and collaboration with family and friends. This is something that we have been doing in many generations and still it is many things that remains of a long history here. Of course, there are modernizations as well, such as motorization, cottages and saunas in connection with the reindeer herding in the summer camp.

Or, actually a workday is working the night hours when the temperature is more humid and never a burning hot summer day in sunshine. Reindeer calf marking happens in the chilly night hours always.

  Inside the tipitent it is cozy, protection from rain and wind, but also, protection from mosquitos. We prepare food, boil coffee, and sleep, here is our bed a reindeer skin.

 These fish are named arctic char and are red in color.
